Music, Sex + Nerds!
Do you like music, sex and nerds? Who doesn’t — but what about them all mashed up together? This combination has many possibilities — it could be frightening, or awesome.
In the case of this year’s EMP Pop Studies Conference, which takes place in Seattle in just over two weeks, that combination should yield some pretty great results. This year’s theme to the conference, which brings academics and music writers together, is sex! Lots of music obsessives will be there (including myself) giving presentations and the event is really a wonderful thing, probably the only bright spot on the horizon for those who love to write about music.
This year’s Pop Conference is ready to dance, sing a love song, and contemplate what it means for music to be embodied and for bodies to lose control. More than 125 presenters will speak over the course of four days. The theme has produced talks on such topics as ragtime and reggaetón, Serge Gainsbourg and Flashdance, groupies and divas and whether there is any sex to be found in indie rock.
