A Playlist and Interview from Soulwax Steve!

REWIND: Soulwax Steve

Every Friday, we hit rewind to visit one of our older playlists. The following is one of our favorites from the Loudcrowd vaults — a playlist from (and interview with) Steve from Soulwax!

Last month I spoke with Steve Slingeneyer; Soulwax drummer, 2ManyDJs contributor, record collector, and DJ under the self-satisfied moniker One Man Party. Steve had just graced the gritty streets of his former East Village stomping grounds, greeting New York City kids with a One Man Party opening set for dramatic post-French Touch DJ Danger.

Fucci: How was Webster Hall?

Steve: It was great! I played mostly electro but threw in rock and disco …I was surprised, I would play a certain track I wouldn’t think anyone would know, but the harder I played the more they would get into it! I played (classic Belgian acid track) Jay Dee’s Plastic Dreams (but) people went more crazy to Guns N’ Bombs. Young kids are so ADD sometimes; they can’t wait for things!

FC: You opened for Danger, one of the latest from the new guard of French bangers. What do you think of the whole fidget house trend of DJ/Producers like Crookers and MSTRKRFT?

SS: Danger is like Justice with melody and drama. Almost soundtrack-y. I like that stuff- I find (drama) in 60s and 70s, and italo-disco. The Crookers were in the studio with us- they’re Italian guys who came from hip hop stumbled into electro. They bring a circus, carnival aspect …they make so many remixes, and people dance to that shit and go crazy, but I also would love people to go crazy to old Chicago stuff and disco stuff.

FC: Me too! Do you try to educate people on classic stuff with the new music you are doing now?

SS: Yeah, we just did an hour long spacey disco mix …we all have extensive record collections and we dug for weeks. (before we put it together). Moroder, Chic, Santa Esmerelda, Boney M- all cut up in the too many DJs kind of way.

FC: Any new remixes coming up?

SS: Yeah, we just remixed Mix Hell and the Dead Pixels.

FC: What else are you working on?

SS: We are working on a lot of stuff …this is the first time (Soulwax) stopped touring in 4 years! I think we’ve reached the maximum of what we can do live with electro. I would like to do something completely different …we might turn into a disco band! By summer we should have something together;  an anti-album. We might make a collection of EPs with themes.

FC: What about 2 Many DJs?

SS: The new 2Many DJs album just got finished. Crookers were in the studio, also Tiga, then Erol (Alkan), Justice, Mix Hell. And we did this exclusive mix called Introversy for radio BBC, mixing intros of things that we like.

FC: Can you give us a preview?

SS: Easy Lover (Philip Bailey and Phil Collins), I Can’t Explain (The Who), Ginuwine (Pony), Prodigy (Poison)

FC: That sounds rad! Ok, one more. You’ve been working with a lot a great artists- who would you most like to work with now if you had your pick?

SS: I would love to work with Mr. Oizo. I like his quirkiness; the origin of his beats are like P-funk,  but theyn he makes sick euro-trancy stuff on top of it. I also would love to do something with Soulwax and Grace Jones…

Peep here for a preview of the Introversy tracks and 2ManyDJs new disco album. Soulwax Steve’s playlist runs live every Thursday!
