Runaway Use Me

Just in time for us LoudCrowders to run down to SXSW, DJ Dirty Jean is stepping in to help keep things running up in the Northernland. A good friend, I first met her in the early noughties as a resident at NYC’s The Hole for the debaucherous Mad Clams, a weekly party thrown by Miss Kim Ann Foxman (now of Hercules and Love Affair). I’ve seen her DJ’ing all around NYC since then, and she started NYC’s first Italo-disco party, Cazzo Pazzo, which she ran with Andy Butler (also of H&LA fame).

Dirty Jean will be blogging on what’s new with Loudcrowd as we have our public debut, and of course, sounding off on music. Here’s her take on why Runaway’s Use Me is the best track of this week.

The first time I heard this 12”, I was DJ’ng alongside my pal Cowboy Mark on a Saturday night in Brooklyn. I had just spent the week prior freaking out over the original track the vocal samples were ripped from: Dirty Cash by Stevie V. I had heard it a few times at the gym — I mean where else? Before showing up to my gig, I made sure I had a copy of it and planned to mix it in somewhere between Todd Terry and Ten City. But Mark beat me to it, sort of.

The track starts out with a haunting echo-like effect that gives you the sense you just walked into a cave rave. The build-up is very slight and perfectly creepy with drums similar to those in Dirty Cash, only minimized and leaving out the jingling synthetic cymbals. Just when you think the bats are about to swoop at your face, in comes the soiled currency…”I’ve no excuse, I just want you to use me, Take me and abuse me…(echoing heavily on ‘Abuse Me’)…”I got no taboos, I’ll make a trade with you, Do anything you want me to.”

Then the house horns blow. This is where it pretty much just grabs hold and you end up with the song on repeat for a few rounds. Slightly addicted, I’d say this track is the perfect follow up to the Loudcrowd favorite, Runaway’s Brooklyn Club Jam. Here, have a listen.
