Want to see some cool, artworld-type art that addresses dance subcultures of the last thirty years? Check this, an excerpt of the video from Mark Leckey’s 1999 installation “Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore.” It really is beautiful, these slowed-down images of people dancing as if gravity is all of a sudden… different. I believe the original installation of the work projected these slow-moving figures larger than life? That’s rad.
The work apparently draws from “original footage of discos and raves across Britain during the 70s, 80s and 90s.” Clearly what we see here in the YouTube clip is more the ’70s and ’80s — would love to see the entire thing, especially the images drawn from the ’90s UK rave scene.
Fiorucci is of course the expensive trashy disco-era designer whose New Wave print ads were pretty amazing. More on Fiorucci at this very fun blog entry, which describes the designer’s wares as “Debbie Harry’s dream closet: fluorescent jumpsuits, parachute pants, high-heeled sneakers and kooky disco clothes.”
