Welcoming DFA plus Exclusive Material from Woolfy!

Look out for our current guest playlist, curated by the pioneering label DFA, and featuring Woolfy’s new release, the emotional post-punk plea Oh Missy. I’m excited to host these tracks (selected with care by DFA’s gentlemanly ambassador Justin Miller), particularly the three distinctive versions of Oh Missy; the Xenon Mix by glamour trash twins In Flagranti, an extended mix by Woolfy himself (both out earlier this week), and a sneak preview of the Whatever Whatever remix from mixing legend/acid house champion Justin Strauss, hitting the world on Feb 17th.

Justin Strauss is the bomb for four reasons. Sinead O’ Connor Mandinka. Erasure A Little Respect. Depeche Mode Everything Counts. And my favorite, Luther Vandross Never Too Much. (Do not balk this track completely awesome.)  Strauss had a production arm in all of these songs, creating some of the better versions-PLUS he is credited for the absolute best mixes of legendary house/acid jazz/future jazz/techno genre-fucking mindmelding Pacific State by acid pioneers 808 State. (Strauss produced Pacific State 0101 and Pacific State 212). So yeah, I am stoked to premiere his work here in Loudcrowd.

DFA’s own mixing techniques are part of what made me such a big fan. Sick DJs and DFA co-founders James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy make a regular killing at NYC’s Santo’s Party House with their bi-monthly party Special Disco Version, and turn out crazy (and sometimes even better) mixes of already great songs (Remember their remix of Le Tigre’s Deceptacon? Or, like, all of their Hot Chip remixes!?!) As legend goes, the DFA jump-off started when Murphy heard the Rapture at NYC’s now-deceased Brownies, and recognized greatness under a slightly soggy indie blanket. Once in the studio, DFA infused the track with textures culled from deep disco and post-punk (Slamming cymbals! Jagged guitar stabs! More cowbell!) the foundation was laid once again for dance music that kicks ass without over-mechanized intent or apology.

Listen up for DFA’s guest playlist live through Feb 18th @ 3, 6, 9, and 12 AM and PM.
