This weekend, we’re supposed to care about the Super Bowl, and to talk a lot about which ads were the best. I played football in high school — not well, but I started — and I can see the appeal of watching football games, but it’s just not in me for whatever reason. All I care about is the Puppy Bowl, that Animal Planet show that runs during halftime. Have you seen it? It’s pretty genius. Maybe after the viral success of cute-things-falling-asleep videos they’ll stop it midway for a naptime segment this year? ‘Cause who doesn’t want to watch this, even if it’s as played out as a LOLCat?

Over in Brooklyn tonight at Danbro Studios, hipsters can go to their own sort of Super Bowl, thanks to superstar promoter (and awesome guy) Todd P — a Brooklyn vs. Baltimore competition, with B’more’s Dan Deacon as the evening’s headliner. (Prediction: all remaining cases of Sparks will be downed there, tonight.) The cult of the lo-fi electronic popster Deacon keeps growing, and it’s curious. Here in Portland people have been making music that sounds like that and dressing like rave baby crackheads for the last decade — but of course Deacon brings that Baltimore party vibe to his schtick that is tough to resist. I love the way he’s so into distorted melodies, and he certainly knows how to work a crowd, holy moley. Also, as a fellow fat dude, I am always glad to see one of my heavy-set brothers showing off his body and reveling in his sexiness.

In conclusion, yay for puppies and chubsters!    —DJ Yeti
