Bye bye, 2008

Our best of ‘08 poll is over and the winner is — a tie! Between Cut Copy’s song Lights And Music and Kings of Leon with Sex on Fire. That’s a curious juxtaposition, don’t you think?

Certainly, both songs embrace the past and future at the same time. With Cut Copy we have a very fun, forward-thinking work of dance-pop (part of the great Australian invasion of ‘08) that was one of my personal picks so I’m naturally glad to see that it won (erm, co-won). And the Nashville, TN-based Kings of Leon may employ propulsive nu-disco rhythms, but they hearken back more to the past, imho. You’ve got ’70s rock histrionics in the vocal style, while the guitar is totes ’80s anthemic stadium shizz — The Edge should be getting royalties just for that great, soaring tone.

A few people were confused about our poll, to judge from the comments section for the poll post. Some suggested that we only chose from tunes already in the game, but that wasn’t the case. We should have mentioned that we were trying to avoid the usual suspects — i.e. why there was no MGMT song on here. But also these are just favorites from all the staff at Loudcrowd. I found it to be a very eclectic and fun selection, myself.

Anyway, thanks so much for participating! Loudcrowd will totally rule in ‘09, just you wait. (Speaking of waiting — less than three weeks until we have a new president!!!) —Mike
