“URB” as in “urban” - urban music, art, film, fashion and culture. Started in 1990 by Raymond Roker, URB was revolutionary in the way it didn’t - and doesn’t - take genre distinctions too seriously. In the ’90s, many magazines trumpeting electronic music as “the new rock.” And they started and then very promptly folded. URB never played into this reductive way of looking at only one aspect of culture, which has surely helped in their continued success. It’s one of the only glossy magazines out there that seriously considers dance music, that can write about it with authority and without making ridiculous caveats.
