Did you ever join a fan club for anybody or thing, perhaps a musician? The first fan club I ever joined was for the Who, when I was 13 years old. This is very pre-Internet; I got a little fanzine in the mail a few times a year. Thanks to a cute little section at the back, I became penpals with a few older fans who very kindly made me cassette and VHS tapes of unreleased/ otherwise unavailable material by my favorite band.
I’ve never stopped loving that band, especially in their pre-Tommy era. As far as I’m concerned, the best concept album is their 1967 LP The Who Sell Out — especially because the loose concept (of the record being part of a pirate radio broadcast including fake commercials interspersed between songs) fell apart when they ran out of money.
It’s funny how you can be obsessed about a group and there’s still so much you don’t know/ haven’t seen — like this video for their late ’60s song “Call Me Lightning,” which I just came across accidentally today. If you enjoy both silliness and balls-out ’60s garage rock, you might want to have a look!
