Loudcrowd Pick of the Week
I love the idea of a great one-man/ one-woman band. I’m not talking about your increasingly ubiquitous bedroom pop kind — your Paul McCartneys holed up in the studio obsessively playing all the instruments themselves. I am talking about a dirty, dragged-out, shit-kicking artist who’s playing percussion and a loud instrument and singing all at once. Not many of those, when you get right down to it: Moondog, Abner Jay, and maybe Bob Log spring to mind.
Anyone I’m forgetting? No laptops allowed for these purposes, sorry. Anyway, the Bay Area’s young, bluesy noise-garage guy Ty Segall is a terrific one-man-bander, as evidenced by his LP on Castle Face, the about-to-be-released Goner album Lemons, and this YouTube clip. His band the Epsilons is worth checking out too, and he joined one of the best bands in America, the Sic Alps, earlier this year. Yowzah!
