Santigold brings the heat with her top ten
REWIND: Summer in the City
Every Friday, we hit rewind to visit one of our older playlists. The following is one of our favorites from the Loudcrowd vaults. To complement our warm-it-up playlist, Santigold put together her own top ten list of jams; an eclectic, mostly vintage blend of hotness. We’re excited that (without solicitation) she picked Major Lazer’s new single Hold The Line, also on our Summer in the City list. Psychic connection? Maybe- though it does feature her own vocalizations, so you never know.
We like Santi White because she’s not afraid to speak her mind (i.e. challenging those who labeled of her music Hip-Hop as racist) and filters no snark when speaking to the media. From the press release where she changed the legal spelling of her name from Santogold to Santigold:
“Change the graffiti on the bathroom wall, get your tattoo fixed, get your T-shirt airbrushed and change the name on your year-end list …Santogold is now Santigold. She’s not telling you why, that’s just how it is.”
A woman who takes no bullshit and is killing it in the music scene? We like. Peep her list of smoldering jams- and a few of my personal comments, just cause.

SANTIGOLD’S TOP TEN WARM UP SONGS
1. “When I Grow Up” Fever Ray
This video makes me nervous. Is she going to fall into the pool? And who will catch her???
2. “Hold The Line” aka “I’ll Make Ya” Major Lazer
3. “Iko Iko” The Dixie Cups
Highlight: puffy sleeves and a hand for Rose for “trying”.
4. “Kana Gnina Allah Ko” Amadou and Mariam
5. “Please, Please, Please” James Brown
Note Brown’s emotive descent to the floor, followed by an attemped robing by his entourage.
6. “Phantom of the Opera” Iron Maiden
I understand Spinal Tap so much better after watching this video.
7. “Television Man” Man or Astro-man?
8. ”Satisfaction” Cat Power
Chan Marshall can make any song sound “deep”.
9. “Mad World” Tears For Fears
Tears for Fears challenge Madonna’s commodification of voguing.
10. “The Day My Baby Gave Me A Surprise” Devo
